Autism and Hoarding – more questions than answers.

Following from last week’s event in Edinburgh - ‘Community Approach to Hoarding’, I have been thinking about the implications for autistic people who have Hoarding and chronic organisational challenges.

Best practices in supporting someone with hoarding problems are usually described from a neurotypical and Western cultural perspective.

When we think about what makes a ‘safe and healthy home’ we don’t immediately think about how this could be very different for someone.

We don’t all have the same priorities, sensory needs or attachments to objects.

In a supported setting how much autonomy does a person actually have about their environment before we impose our own standards about what is best?

How would our regulators view a very cluttered/full bedroom?

There is much for us to rethink?

What do you think?… let me know here.
