What is full time work?

What’s your opinion of full time/part time?

A parent once asked me ‘How many hours a week do you work?’

I replied proudly ‘ Oh we all work for 39 hours a week’

Her response was ‘ I see … so you are all part-time?’

I was humbled as I could see the point she was making:  for her, as a parent of an autistic child…that was full time, and we were simply dipping in and out of her daughter’s life.

Now many years later – I know she was right but at the same time, I expect very few in this profession only do our contracted hours.

  • What are you thinking about on the commute to work or on the way home?

  • What thoughts keep you awake in the middle of the night?

  • When you are walking the dog what new ideas come to you?

  • Are you preoccupied about how to help someone and frustrated when you can’t?

I am not going to be apologetic for being a professional and not a ‘full-time’ carer, but I do care and it’s a wee bit more than a full-time job.

What do you think?

Tell me here.
